I have found a class of objects for which the appearance of each member changes drastically when it is reflected in a mirror. A typical example is a roof of a garage: it appears to be a rounded roof, but when reflected in a mirror, it changes into a corrugated roof. We named this class of objects “ambiguous solids”. A rigid object and its mirror image should be mirror images of each other; the object cannot change into another shape. Therefore, what is happening to the reflection is not a physical change, but an optical illusion, created by the perceptual system in our brain. What are ambiguous optical illusions? Ambiguous illusions are illusions that are meant to shift from one object to another as a person’s perception of them changes. A famous ambiguous illusion is the white-candlestick-two-black-silhouetted-faces illusion. What is an example of an ambiguous illusion? Perhaps the most basic example of an ambiguous image is the Necker Cube. The cube can be seen in two different ways: facing down and to the left or up and to the right. How does ambiguous object illusion work? When you put it in front of a mirror, you see both sides at once—so you will see a circle in front of you but the reflection of a square in the mirror, or vice versa. This illusion only works, however, when the cylinder is viewed from a certain angle. What is an ambiguous image? A picture of a subject which the viewer may see as either of two different subjects or as the same subject from either of two different viewpoints depending on how the total configuration is interpreted.
